How to Communicate with Confidence

I’ve been there - the feeling of discomfort of being able to properly communicate with others if something needs to be done in a different way, or putting my thoughts across to someone who is gearing themselves up for conflict.

It can be uncomfortable and it can feel overwhelming.

Or what about putting yourself in a passive state where you’re saying “Yes” to something and you don’t really mean it and then kicking yourself afterwards for not sharing your thoughts in return.

That fast-tracks feelings of resentment and keeps you confined in a box.

Assertive communication is the goal.

And everyone benefits - you, team members and even loved ones if you apply it in your personal life.

Understanding Assertive Communication

Assertive communication is a communication style characterised by clarity, confidence, composure and respect. Unlike passive communication, where individuals avoid conflict and fail to express their needs, and aggressive communication, which involves dominating and belittling others, assertive communication strikes a balance. It allows you to express your thoughts and feelings openly and honestly while also respecting the opinions and boundaries of others.

It adds to your integrity and good communication qualities which are fundamentals if you want to be a good leader.

In a business setting, Assertive Communication is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Clear Instructions: Assertive communication ensures that instructions and expectations are shared clearly, minimising misunderstandings and errors.
  2. Respectful Interaction: By expressing yourself assertively, you demonstrate respect for yourself and others, which creates a culture of mutual respect within your team.
  3. Conflict Resolution: Assertive communication enables you to address conflicts constructively, leading to quicker resolutions and strengthened relationships.
  4. Increased Confidence: When you communicate assertively, you exude confidence, inspiring trust and confidence in your leadership abilities.

Actionable Daily Tips

  1. Use "I" Statements: When expressing your thoughts or feelings, begin your sentences with "I" to take ownership of your message and avoid sounding accusatory.
  2. Active Listening: Apply active listening by giving your full attention to the person you’re speaking to, paraphrasing their message to ensure understanding, and asking clarifying questions.
  3. Set Boundaries: Clearly communicate your boundaries and expectations to your team members, and encourage them to do the same.
  4. Practice Empathy: Put yourself in the shoes of others to better understand their perspectives and respond with empathy and understanding.

Case Study: Transforming Communication in the Banking Industry

David, a manager in the banking industry, was struggling to effectively communicate with his team of three employees. He often found himself being passive and not giving a clear direction to his team which led to a disjointed environment, lack of focus and feelings of resentment.

David attended our Leadership & Management course and understood the benefits of using Assertive Communication and was committed to a self improvement journey to put the new skills into practice.

I was pleased to hear from David shortly after the course that he has been implementing some of our actions and he’s noticed a significant improvement in his team’s engagement, receipt of instructions and feels much more confident and content overall.

This makes me very happy - what a result!

David's journey is a fantastic case study to the transformative power of assertive communication in the workplace. By embracing this communication style, he not only improved his leadership skills but is also providing a more positive and productive work environment for his team.
