Running a business is no small feat. As a business owner, your days are likely filled with endless tasks, meetings, and decisions that can often leave you feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. In the hustle and bustle of entrepreneurship, it's easy to overlook one crucial aspect of success: personal wellness.

In this article, I’m going to share why prioritising your well-being is not only essential for your own health and happiness but also for the growth and success of your business.

The connection between Personal Wellness and Business Success:

The connection between the two may not be immediately apparent, but they are intricately linked. Your physical, mental, and emotional well-being directly impact your ability to lead effectively, make sound decisions, and have space for innovation within your business. When you neglect your own health and happiness, it inevitably spills over into your professional life, leading to decreased productivity, increased stress, and ultimately dreaded burnout.

On the other hand, when you prioritise your personal wellness, you set yourself up for success on multiple fronts. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and time for relaxation not only improve your physical health but also boost your cognitive function and creativity. Taking care of your mental and emotional well-being through mindfulness practices, having some “you time” or simply spending time with loved ones, helps you manage stress more effectively and maintain a positive mindset, even in the face of challenges.

Don't forget, you lead by example.

How great does it feel when you can see your team members thriving when their tanks are full too?

You win. They win. The business wins.

Actionable Daily Tips:

  1. Schedule regular exercise: Make physical activity a non-negotiable part of your daily routine. Whether it's a morning jog, yoga, workout class, sports or an evening walk, find activities that you enjoy and prioritise them in your schedule.

  1. Practice mindfulness: Take a few minutes each day to quiet your mind and focus on the present moment. This could be through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply taking a few moments to appreciate the world around you. Remind yourself of all of the things you are grateful for. If this is too much too soon, that’s ok - find a great book to read instead. It’s important to explore what works for you.

  1. Set boundaries: Learn to say no to tasks or commitments that drain your energy or detract from your well-being. Delegate responsibilities where possible and prioritise tasks that align with your goals and values.

  1. Prioritise sleep: Aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night to ensure optimal cognitive function and mood regulation. Create a relaxing bedtime routine and avoid screens and caffeine before bed.

Case Study: Charlotte Steel

I’m going to put myself in the spotlight for this week’s Case Study for a change.

Everyday for the last 5 years, I have navigated having to juggle being a Single Parent, running a home, school runs, after school clubs, being a present partner, budgeting, working full time, business development, having space to be innovative, exercising, finding time to learn more and having some kind of a social life.

Life is full on.

Some days go well and some days not so much.

This is the natural rollercoaster of life which I’m sure will resonate with most.

But there’s no hardship that’s felt here. I am incredibly lucky to have the life I have and I don’t take it for granted.

BUT - there was a time when all of this was just so overwhelming and it was a miracle that I could get out of bed some days. Even putting socks on was a winning moment for me. I was burned out, broken and nothing more than a shell.

I remember vividly one evening in August 2021 whilst on holiday with my children, I read the book “Your Oxygen Mask First”, by Kevin Lawrence, and this book changed me. Kevin’s entire theory is about if you want to thrive, you have to put yourself first and you have to have balance.

It quickly resonated with me that nobody wins when your tank is running on empty. Not you, not your family, not your team members, not your business. No one.

When I got home, something had shifted. I realised that only I was responsible for me and if nothing changes, then nothing changes. Something had to give.

Thankfully fast forward to today, I’m still juggling everything as mentioned above but it’s done with balance, resilience and a stronger and much more positive mindset. I practice all of the tips shared above and they have all played a part in helping me to Thrive. I’m happier, healthier and readily available now to take on any challenge within business and have the privilege of being able to help people.

Again, I am incredibly lucky and you deserve this too.

Remember:

  • Your Oxygen Mask First!
  • And if nothing changes, then nothing changes.
